Since opening in 2013, Northamptonshire Growth Hub has recieved over 2,000 calls from local businesses seeking support - find out more about some of the businesses we've helped with the case studies below.

Griff’s established in 2014 after Iain and Emily had a vision of leaving their previous professions behind to begin producing hand crafted products. Today, Griff’s produces high quality aprons and prides itself with its values of tradition. It is clear that the vision shared by the couple is what gives Griff’s brand a unique personality; wishing to remain a small but growing business means that they can ensure the care and attention for the products remains their priority alongside generating steady revenue. Griff’s source some of their materials from a company in Texas USA which produce a limited amounted of printed textiles. They use the unique materials to create limited edition products which appeal to the niche markets.

Griff’s contacted the NGH advisors in 2014 after seeing a NGH advertisement on social media. Iain’s curiosities led him to contact NGH for business support. The advisors signposted Iain to The University of Northampton Enterprise club’s Business Advisor, Dr Hiten Vyas, who provided invaluable support and advice on sales and marketing. In January 2015 Griff’s moved to new premises within the University of Northampton Portfolio Innovation Centre to cope with production demands.

The couple reached a pinnacle with the honour of producing the prestigious awards for the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards 2015/16 - miniature aprons with the awards branding elegantly encased in a frame – which increased Griff’s profile still further.

Plans are in place for Griff’s to start creating bespoke aprons tailored for specific industry professionals (i.e. gardeners, artists, and chefs), identifying new markets has allowed business growth. Last year wholesale customers were a potential market; today Griff’s have produced aprons for approximately 40 wholesale customers. Sales events run by Mark Whitehead (A head 4 Sales) and events run by NGH has given Griff’s valuable business support, and given Iain and Emily an insight how to effectively grow their business further.

In the future Griff’s aspire to recruit an apprentice to help with the production of their products. This reflects their core company values of tradition, by recruiting an apprentice Emily and Iain hope to pass on their skills and the tradition of their crafts to a younger generation.

Maria Krupasova introduced her sweet treat café in November 2015 just in time for the Christmas rush. Maria offers a taste of European delight with homemade cakes reflecting the Slovakian heritage of the owner, all of which are made freshly on site. The café is situated in an idyllic location in the centre of Northampton, with a bus stop right outside, which is perfect for tempting passers-by. Maria’s newly refurbished premises are split on two levels. The ground floor offers a classic café dining experience, with the second floor providing an inviting play area for children. Understanding her target market has allowed Maria to establish a unique coffee shop which caters for adults along with the accompanying children visiting the cafe. The on-site play area allows children to play and socialise whilst the adults can enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee and a piece of cake. 

Already Maria is keen to appeal to new markets which will enable her to grow her business. Maria is looking to produce cakes to order, alongside hosting children’s parties in the upstairs play room. Utilising her services will enable Maria to generate steady revenue. Maria is already witnessing regular repeat customers who visit her café on a daily basis; with this influx of positivity Maria has an optimistic outlook on the future of her business.

In order to get her Café to where it is today Maria sort after valuable business support, this lead to Maria contacting the Northamptonshire Growth Hub. The NGH provided Maria with valuable business support when she embarked on her new business venture; the NGH was able to provide the help Maria needed to establish her business. Following her original enquiry Maria has since contacted the business advisors for support in the recruitment of staff members, following the guidance by one of the advisors Maria attended an event run by the NGH. By attending the ‘Building a Winning Team’ event it helped Maria to recruitment staff members to support the day to day running of the business. Maria has decided to go to future networking events to help her to establish more business connections, and she is keen to attend future business support workshops being run by the NGH, to help Maria to become more confident in the world of business.

Sue Jaycock started Choosewellbeing in July 2015 and, with a fast-growing clientele, already has three clinics. Clients are treated using a method called Neurostructural Integration Technique, an advanced form of Bowen Technique which is gaining popularity in the UK as well as the USA and Europe.

The Northamptonshire Growth Hub was approached by Sue who needed professional validation of her business ideas, input as to the best way forward and meticulous feedback.
